Troubleshooting - How To Guide
How To Adjust Bandwidth Requirements

Fluctuations in the stream rate (bandwidth) of your Internet connection can cause several problems -- including green screens, flipped (inverted) images, and pausing/buffering.  We broadcast at three different rates and sometimes, due to fluctuations in the Internet bandwidth, a viewer's media player will jump back and forth between two rates.

The following steps may help:

For DSL/Cable connections:
(Dial-up users, please see next section below.)

  1. Start "Windows Media Player"
  2. If the menu is not showing, hold the [CNTRL] key and press the "M" key to display the menu bar.
  3. Click on the "Tools" menu, then select "Options..." -- this will pop up the Options dialog box

  4. Click on the "Performance" tab.
  5. In the "Connection speed" section, click on "Choose connection speed" and select "DSL/Cable (256 Kbs)" from the drop-down box below it.
  6. In the "Network buffering" section, click on "Buffer" and enter "10" in the seconds box to the right of it.

  7. After these items are set, click the "OK" button to save the items and close the dialog box.

How To Adjust Mixer Volume

Low volume while playing on-line broadcasts or archives may be caused by a setting on the sound mixer of the computer.

Right-click the speaker icon at the bottom right of the screen and select "Open Volume Control" to open the sound mixer.

To adjust volume on Windows XP:

For Windows XP (or similar), please make sure that the mute boxes are not checked and the volume control sliders labeled "Wave" and "Master Volume" are up -- then press OK.

To adjust volume on Windows Vista:

For Windows Vista (or similar), sliding the volume control on the "Windows Media Player" application should adjust the mixer volume. If not, please make sure that the mute box is not checked and the volume control sliders labeled "Windows Media Player" and "Speakers" are up -- then close the dialog box.

(If a volume button does not appear, press the Start button and type "sndvol" in the Program Search box. Click on the "sndvol" link that appears to open the volume mixer.)

Please also check the volume slider on the Windows Media Player itself. Version 11 of the player may require clicking on the volume button to access the slider. At times, it may reset itself to about 50% when the player starts.

How To Turn Off the Content Advisor

Enabling the "Content Advisor" in Internet Explorer can prevent the browser from downloading MP3 or WMV files to your local computer.  When Content Advisor is enabled, the "Save Target As..." option (from right-mouse button menu) will be greyed out and disabled.  To allow downloads, you may temporarily disable the Content Advisor by taking the following steps:

To disable Content Advisor on Internet Explorer:

  1. Click on "Tools", then select "Internet options..." -- this will pop up the Internet Options dialog box
  2. Click on the "Content" tab

  3. In the "Content Advisor" section, click on the "Disable..." button and follow the instructions for entering the password to disable it.
  4. OR: If you are familiar with setting up Content Advisor, click on the "Settings..." button and configure the browser to allow downloads from our server (archiveserver.morelifenow.org).

  5. Close the dialog boxes and restart Internet Explorer
